Ans. When we speak our tongue vibrates and sound is produced.

Q.2. Give three ways how plants produce sound.
Ans. Three ways how plants produced sounds are:-
1) It produced sound by rattling of their leaves when air blows.
2) When twigs, branches and fruits fall down from the leaves.
3) When animals and birds make their way through the leaves and branches.

Q.3. Give any three ways to reduce noise pollution.
Ans. Three ways to reduce noise pollution are:-
1) We should not play the television, radio or music player at loud volumes.
2) Try to blow horn only when necessary.
3) Loud speakers should be avoided.

Ans. Loud sounds can damage our ears and may cause permanent deafness.

Q.1. Give the importance of soil.
Ans. Soil is an important natural resources because we grow grains, vegetables and other plants on it. It also provides shelter to a number of insects and animals.

Ans. The resources present naturally on earth are known as natural resources.

Q.3. What do you understand by fossil fuels?
Ans. The remains of plants and animals which were buried deep under the earth got converted into fossil fuels. These fuels contain a lot of energy.

Ans. The process by which the clean air gets contaminated with other gases, dust and chemicals is called air pollution.

Ans. Some fossil fuels are coal, charcoal, petrol, diesel etc.

CHAPTER 9: SEASONS AND ITS IMPACT
Answer the following:-
Q.1. If the earth stops rotating on its axis, what kind of changes would you expect?
Ans. If the earth stops rotating on its axis, then the phenomenon of day and night would not occur. The part facing the sun will have day forever and the part facing away from the sun will have night forever.

Q.2. What is solar year?
Ans. Earth takes 365 1/4 days to complete one revolution. This time period is called a solar year.

Q.3. What would happen if the axis of earth was not tilted?
Ans. If the axis of the earth was not tilted the distance of the South pole and the north pole from the sun would have been the same. Both the hemispheres would have received the same amount of heat. There would have been no change of season.

Q.4. What is the basic cause of floods in interior areas?
Ans. In the interior areas floods are caused due to continuous burst of rainfall or a cloud  burst which makes the soil incapable of holding any more water and thus, the water enters the cities and submerges it.

Q.5. Give three ways in which droughts can be prevented.
Ans. Three ways in which droughts can be prevented are:-
1. It can be prevented by growing more trees as the roots have the capacity to hold water.
2. During transpiration trees gives out water vapours and help in giving moisture to the air to cause rain.
3. We should also develop means to harvest rainwater which can be used in case of droughts and hence we can reduce its harmful impact.

Ans. Water which is present on the surface of the earth is called surface water. Whereas, the water which collects over the hard rock below the earth is called underground water.

Q.2. Why is underground water considered to be clean water?
Ans. Underground water is considered to be clean water as it is free from suspended impurities because it is filtered by nature as it passes through several layers of the soil.

Ans. Circulation of water from the earth's surface to the atmosphere and back to the earth is called the water cycle.

b) Solute
c) Unsaturated Solution
d) Saturated Solution.
Ans. a) Solvent: A liquid which dissolves other substances in it is called solvent.
b) Solute: A substance which dissolves in liquid is called solute.
c) Unsaturated Solution: A Solution which has less amount of Solute is known as unsaturated Solution.
d) Saturated Solution: A Solution which has large amount of Solute is known as saturated solution.

Ans. Three steps to get rid of unwanted insects are:-
1) Hair should be kept clean by washing and regular combing.
2) Moth balls or dried neem leaves should be kept with silk or woolen clothes.
3) We should spray chemicals like D.D.T and other insecticides in the places where insects live.

Q.2. Name four harmful insects.
Ans. Four harmful insects are grasshoppers, beetles, locusts and mosquitoes.

Q.3. Give two important products given by bees.
Ans. Two important products given by bees are wax and honey.

Q.4. Why insects do not fly like birds?
Ans. Insects do not fly like birds because most of the insects have wings which are not very muscular.

Q.5. How does a butterfly suck nectar?
Ans. Butterflies have a long sucking tube in their mouth called proboscis. It uses this tube to suck nectar from a flower.

Ans) Bulbul birds uses dry grass to build its nest in hedges and bushes. It looks like a deep cup.

Ans) Ducks use their webbed feet to swim in the water. Their webbed feet help them to paddle and push water while swimming.

Q.3) Give two functions of feet and claws.
Ans) The two functions of feet and claws are:
       1) Feet help the birds to walk and run on the ground.  
       2) Claws help the birds to hold the branch and claws also help them to protect themselves.

Q.4) Name two preying birds. Give a special feature of preying bird.
Ans) Eagles and hawks are two preying birds. They have strong and sharp claws that are called talons to catch and hold their prey.

Q.5) Why do birds make a nest? What is a nest made up of?
Ans) Birds make a nest to live, to lay eggs and to keep their young ones safe and warm. Nests are made up of grass, twigs, feathers, papers, old clothes, rags, cotton, wool, mud and leaves.

Ans. Seeds are the hard structures present in a fruit. It contains a tiny baby plant in it.

Ans. The baby plant needs a proper amount of sunlight, air, water and minerals from the soil to grow.
