CHAPTER 9: THE STORY OF SILK

1. Where was Silk discovered?
Ans : Silk was discovered in China.

2. What did the girl who became an empress do to fill her time before she got married?
Ans: She belonged to a weaver's family and used to work in the fields from dawn to night without a moment's rest.

3. Why was the empress sad?
Ans: She had grown up in the wide open spaces of the country side, and now she was confined to a palace, magnificent though it was. She was used to working from dawn to night without a moment's rest, but now she had many servants to take care of her needs and did not know how to fill her time. In the village she had been surrounded by family and friends who exchanged news and gossip as they worked, but in the palace it was quiet and no one spoke out of turn.

4. What did the emperor do to try and make the empress happy?
Ans : The emperor noticed that the empress was sad and tried his best to make her happy.  He bought her grand clothes, jewels and artifacts, threw elaborate parties, and hired the best musicians of the land to amuse her.

5. Where was the empress when she discovered silk and what was she doing?
Ans : The empress was sitting under a mulberry bush in her garden. She was lost in her thoughts about her village while she slowly sipped hot water from a cup, she was staring up at the blue sky, remembering the birds that flew over her village.

6. What was the great idea that the empress had?
Ans : The empress had the great idea that she would take the thread from many cocoons and weave soft, strong cloth from it.

7. What type of people wore silk?
Ans : Only royalty wore silk.

8. Where did the princess who took the knowledge of how to make Silk out of China hide the cocoons?
Ans : She hid them in her long, elaborate hairdo.

a. Where did the children live? 
Ans: The children lived in a small fishing village by the sea in South India.

b. What did the children's fathers do? 
Ans: The children's fathers were fishermen.

c. What did the children do all day? 
Ans:  The children spent their days building sandcastles, chasing crabs, swimming in the sea and climbing coconut palms all day long, since there was no school in the village. 

d. Why did the children not go to school? 
Ans: The children did not go to school because there was no school in the village in which they lived.

e. What did the children do when they found the bottle?
Ans: The children opened the cap of the bottle and found a  piece of  paper with some  writing on it. Since they could not read or write, they took the paper to Old Manu, the village shopkeeper, who could read it for them.

f. Why did the children take the paper to Old Manu? 
Ans:The children took the paper to Old Manu because he could read and write and would therefore, be able to read out the writing on the paper for them. 

g. How did Old Manu help the children?
Ans: Old Manu helped the children by teaching them to read and write.

Ans: The car was stuck in the pothole on the road outside Priya's house.

c. When did a traffic jam occur and why? 
Ans: A traffic jam occurred when the road was blocked by a cart that had lost its load owing to the pothole on the road. 

d. How many accidents had taken place in two weeks? 
Ans: Nine accidents had occurred in two weeks. 

e. Which words are used to describe the pothole?
Ans: The words used to describe the pothole are big, gaping mouth, waited darkly.

f. Which things did Priya collect together? 
Ans: Priya collected a bucket of soil, some small flowering shrubs, a watering can filled with water, a bag of compost, three lengths of wood and some board-pins. 

g. Where did Priya place the three signs that she had made?
Ans: Priya placed two ROAD CLOSED signs on either side of the pothole as she worked to turn it into a garden. After she was done, she placed the third sign (that said: PLEASE BE CAREFUL! GARDEN IN ROAD!) into the soil that she had- used to make the garden.

Ans : Wilhelm was making a wooden bowl.
 
h. How did Thekla and Manfred treat the old man? 
Ans : Thekla and Manfred always got angry with the old man. They punished him by making him sit in a corner and eat from a wooden bowl.

i. Whose eyes filled with tears? Why? 
Ans : The parents' (Thekla and Manfred's) eyes filled with tears because they had treated the old man badly. They realized that they too would grow old one day and be treated the same way. 

j. Does the story teach us any lessons? What are they? 
Ans : Yes, the story teaches us a lesson. It tells us that we should be careful about how we treat our elders because one day we will grow old too.

Ans : The Scarecrow carried Dorothy's basket for her.

7. What did the Scarecrow want to ask the Wizard of Oz for?

Ans : The Scarecrow wanted to ask the Wizard of Oz for a brain.

 8. How do we know that the Scarecrow is kind and polite? 

Ans: We know that the Scarecrow is kind and polite because when he meets Dorothy, he politely says 'How do you do.' He thanks her for helping him get off the pole. He is grateful to Dorothy when she says that she will ask Oz to help him. He also carries her basket for her.

9. Can you explain why the Scarecrow is afraid of a lighted match? 

Ans : The Scarecrow is afraid of a lighted match because his entire body is stuffed with straw and straw catches fire very easily. 

10. The Scarecrow says that he doesn't have a brain. Is it possible to walk and talk without a brain?

Ans:  No, it is not possible to walk and talk without a brain, but this is a story and the Scarecrow is a fictional character.

Ans: We can still hear the Robin's song in the cold winter.
